Whats In A Name. (Story Behind The Wallpaper Collection Naming)

This is a semi fun post. So some users have noticed the "Clever" or "Funny" Naming of some of the wallpapers in the RAVE Wallpaper Collection 1.

We had to name a lot of wallpapers (A lot not even included) and we drew inspiration for those names from many places. Music, People , Movies, books and other media.

Here is a highlight of some of the names and what they are from or references to:

Precipice - Refrence to Lights song "Heavy Rope"

The Street And The Cobbler - Reference to the cartoon movie "The Theif And The Cobbler" The Non Signing version. EG: The original/ semi-unfinished work print.

Steele Star - Reference to Canadian actress/singer Cassie Steele.

Shuttleworth Galaxy - Reference to that guy named Mark Shuttleworth Perhaps you know him? :)

Carle Paper Squares - Reference to Eric Carle, Author of the classic "Hungriest Caterpillar" book, this wallpaper mimics the art style sorta.

Down By The Sea - Reference to the "folk" song.

Sandy Bridge - Reference to the processor line by Intel.

Precise Peacock - Reference to Ubuntu 12.04 codename

Maverick Meerkat - Reference to Ubuntu 10.10 codename

Checked Nights - Reference to a race track in Kirby Air Ride. (TM)

Suits You - Reference to a common a saying.

Urban Lines - Reference to "Dashboard Confessional" Song "Standard Lines"

Wooden Plaink-ing - Reference to the weird trend of "Planking"

What It Says On The Tin - Reference to a  English saying.

Plaid Cool - Plaid this a style or design, it sounds a lot like the english work "plain" as in "plain cool"

Heavy Bricks - Refrence to Lights song "Heavy Rope" again.

Zee Amped Leather - Zee was added to make it at the bottom of the file list, Amped is a reference to the popular "Amp Energy Drink"(TM) By Pepsi(TM) without which this release probably wouldn't be possible (I'd probably fall asleep or get tired)!  :)

Rainy Sunday Mornings - Reference to "Michelle Branch" Song "Tuesday Mornings"
Street Smarts - A saying. Also a old TV show game show?

MetaTrix - A Made up word , but reference to games and applications I wrote back in the day. "Eagle Matrix" (Never released)

Heres a chart of the wallpapers:

RAVEfinity Wallpaper Collection 1 Released! The Story Behind It.

After two years of hard work RAVEfinity is proud to announce the release of one of our semi secret projects! This one has been in the works for such a long time that it understandably  comes as a relief to release it!

Design of the Wallpaper Project started in 2010. I saw some "cool" wallpapers included by default in some other operating systems. (That Fruit company and Android to be exact) At the time I didn't see alot of truly free wallpapers for linux. Alot where taken from non-free sources or wheren't very freely licensed. Thats fine I guess but I wanted create some truly free wallpapers for linux. Ones that could rival the quality of those on OSX(TM) , Windows(TM) etc. And be completely free just like linux in the mean time. By free I don't mean you can "Freely download it" I mean you can remix it distribute it and adapt it!

Thus began the process of creating a bunch of high quality wallpapers from scratch!. we decided to be very stubborn...

We pushed a design Idea and goal of:

Wallpapers must be 2560x16000 or 3200x2000+ Only no exceptions.

We Provide multiple colors of many of the wallpapers namely the RAVEfinity Tri-Color Design. Dark Blue, Grey, Purple. The Idea behind these colors is that they are nice on the eyes and calming. Another goal was to have wallpapers that will hopefully appeal to both genders. (Thats why we added grey and purple) compared to some wallpapers that only come in Blue and Grey. Again I am no expert in this but that was the goal.

Wallpapers must look good, clear sharp and have no artifacts.

We went through a lot of wallpapers (That we created from scratch and on our own!)
alot we threw out because of only one small unfix-able imperfection. Or we didn't want to include it. but we tryed to push for the best!

An important thing to note is that every one of these wallpapers is by the RAVEfinity project. We took lots of photos and rendered a lot of CGI to bring you this collection of  250 High quality wallpapers. we did not "barrow" and use wallpapers or images from anywher else. Our project created every single one of these.

We wanted to bring 100% free and open source wallpapers to everyone!

All the wallpapers are licensed under: Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike.

So check out the RAVEfinity Wallpaper Collection 1 today! -->
Download now! Spred the word!

We hope to post some of the wallpapers that didn't make the cut as weekly exclusives. on the RAVEfinity Wallpaper Collection homepage. So be sure to bookmark and check that out regularly!

Thank You. We hope you enjoy this release!

New Stuff Coming Soon!

New Stuff  IS Coming Soon!

RAVEfinity HQ has been quiet lately! But behind that silence there is a huge amount of work going on (So don't worry We aren't dead) We aren't a huge project so in order to accomplish cretin things we have to "Shift" are focus. We are doing are best to bring out some new stuff very soon!

Late August or September! Stay tuned :)

Change In Mouthly Wrapups.

We previously had a series of posts called the mouthy wrap-up. It highlighted what the project was up to in a given mouth.

We have decided to change the format, Instead of just posting a boring post of what we did and what we hope to do, We have decided to change to creating posts that give an inside look into development or  tell you what we are working on. When it comes up. Meaning they may be posted less or more depending on are time to write.
We WILL still be providing a look and updates on what we are doing just not as a forced monthly post.

New Download Pages. And Servers.

Starting last night (July 15) and Finishing today (July 16) RAVEfiniy started  and finished rolling out simplified links and easier cleaner download pages for all their current themes.

The pages now route anyone downloading a theme directly to US and our download page. Through one simple button that says "Download" Rather then haveing multiple links with long names. We now have full control of the download experience. Meaning it should be easier for users to find the right version of a theme for them and their distro.

We also are now able to update, test and maintain the links better. As all users now land on the same place. (No more editing links in multiple places.)

We where extremely careful not to disrupt or make anything harder on users (Or down-loaders)  This was a huge worry of ours we revised the pages numerous times making them easy and clean as possible. Please feel free to leave your feedback on this.

New faster downloads. We have mirrored all our themes on Dropbox to provide users with instant downloads and a backup mirror for .Debs. (The main server for debs is the Canonical PPA server)

Mediafire is used as our 2nd Mirror on some downloads. But has been moved to 2nd Mirror and replaced by Drop-Box as first because Mediafire recently decided they would now randomly enable "CAPTACHS" - The thing that makes you type in non-scence works and numbers that are barely readable. Mediafire made you goto a another page to start your download already. So that with "CAPTCHAs"  Is just simply too many steps for the main mirror. Thus it is now 2nd. I would like to say Mediafire is still a great service. There downloads are fast, reliable and they don't time limit you too much. We just don't have the money to pay them for instant download links at the moment.

Dropbox is now being used (Google Drive may be used later as well) to host some theme files. It is the main mirror for some (Canonicals PPA system the other). When you click on the download link... the download starts right away without hassling you to click another button and enter a  unreadable "code word".

Lastly... Yes we have moved the PPA Install Instructions to the unified download page as well. Haveing them on a site that wasn't ours (So users visit it and not ours) hurt us in the long run. Haveing users come to our page for download really helps us as a project. (The same as many top themes have you goto their deviantART(TM) page for download)

We have tried to keep the page as fast and easy as possible to navigate. And Keep the ADs useful and not in your way unless you want them. Because in the end The user experience matters the most to us.

Anyway just thought I'd write a post about whats been going on with our GnomeLook and XFCELook Pages.

We also took a few, to redesign the release banners for the themes

See ya on the flipside all. Hope to get the more out soon.

The Mouthly Wrap-Up June 2012

So what did we do in june? and what do we hope it get done next.

A Look At The RAVEfinity 5 GTK/Icon Theme (In Heavy Development)

It's not done just yet! But we thought we'd give you a little sneak peak at the upcoming RAVEfinity 5 Theme Suite (That's Been In Development for over 1 1/2 Years now) The RAVEfinity Theme Suite hasn't seen a release since 2011 "Version 4"

Since that time the theme has been redesigned from the ground up to bring you "One of the most unique and beautiful desktop themes around" We hope you like it when it comes out. Right now it's looking like it will arrive sometime later this year.

So What Does RAVEfinity 5 Theme Sorta Look Like?

Some RAVEfinity 5 Icons. (Alpha/Beta):

 The RAVEfinity 5 GTK Theme:

The Icon Theme being used in this picture is the old Version 4 ones (Not 5)

The RAVEfinity 5 Theme Suite is Designed by Jared Sot. & The RAVEfinity Project in California ,USA  (C) (2010-2012) Licensed Under the GPL v.2 (But not released yet.)

Please don't blatantly rip off this until we release it (It will be free and GPL)  :D

Lot of work needs to be done still. If you want to help us get it done faster consider visiting our site and note that ADs on our site supports us. (And allow us to spend more time on this stuff) *Not to nag you about that but just letting you know.

So whats the state of this theme?

This theme has been though a lot. We did lots of Design work scrutinising every detail. Unfortunately this all happened during the GTK3 Transition. So Instead of releasing a GTK2 Only theme we pulled the release back to foucous on making it GTK3 ready this added complications since we had to learn the GTK3 CSS , Gnome Shell and Unity Themeing Stuff. Also GTK3 does not support the same features as GTK2 Murrine. So we had to pull it back in and redesign both to fit. (So the GTK2 Theme actually looks like the GTK3 one)

The GTK Theme was originally written for GTK2 useing the Pixmap engine (As seen in the image above) (This was about the time of Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 EG. a GTK 2 Theme was all you needed)

However soon after finished Jared decided that pixmap makes some elements look ugly. The Entire theme was Rewritten in "Murrine GTK2" (In a few days actually since we knew how it should look) It looked alot better Then the pixmap one. (Yes the image above is the old version, We still want the real one to be a surprise!)

Then GTK3 Came... The Release Date Slipped yet again :( We had to learn CSS and Re-Implement the entire theme for GTK. During this time the project went pretty dormant (We where working)

We then decided to do the Ambiance and Radiance Colors Themes as well as Xfce port and Icon Theme first so we would have one active release out there (They don't take as long, and we could get them out)

We Feel The Icon Theme Looks Awesome. But It still needs work but that's not the big hurdle.

So After the  we release the updated 12.04.1 Ambiance and Radiance Colors Themes as well as Xfce port and Icon Themes in a mouth or so (July or Aug). We will resume heavy development on this theme. Hopefully bringing it to you sometime later this year.

Once again if you would like support our efforts please send us a email and or keep visiting our site! (The Only way we make any money from this is from ADs on our site. See our homepage (ravefinity.com) for details)

 Whats the RAVEfinity wallpaper project?
More to come on that. (Along with some sneak peaks)

Thanks for the continued support. We hope to bring lots of new work to you all very soon.

-Jared
RAVEfinity Project.

Lots Of NEW STUFF In The Works! But...

We at the RAVEfinity project like to focus on only a few things at one time. Since we don't have all the resources  in the world. We focus are time on a few "core" things at once.

For the past few mouths that has been the Ambiance and Radiance Colors Themes , XFCE Port and Icon Theme. Although not released yet we feel that the 12.04.1 Version of these themes (We have that version in the works right now... Coming Soon) Brings them up to a level we want them. Meaning we can shift are focus on other things till the next release of 12.10. While still maintaing and supporting the theme.

So whats next for RAVEfinity?

1.) The RAVEfinity Wallpaper Collection v 1.0 ********
(We are about 70-80% Done with Version 1)

2.)The RAVEfinity 5 Theme (Icon and GTK)**********
(We have alot of if not all the design done, We just have to recode the GTK theme and finish the Icons)

3.) We are considering working on  or collaborating with a Simplistic GTK theme (And Maybe Icons)
Like this by (Popoki Tom):

FlatSurfaces
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/FlatSurfaces?content=147949

FlatSurfaces Dark
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/FlatSurfacesOnTheNight?content=149472

4.) And Another Surprise Perhaps.

So How Long Will This Take?
Well that all depends. We love doing this work but currently we do it for the better good and for fun.

We now have ADs on this blog and the Site That help support us financially but So far we have only made $ 5 off it in the past 2-3 Mouths. Meaning this is really a passionate labor of love for us so far.

If you like the work we (I know there isn't that much of out work out right now) do I encourage you to visit us more often. And Keep in mind the ADs on this page and on ravefinity.com help support the project.

And yes we'd like to get more people involved  soon. A page is being designed around that.

That being said I can understand that we don't have that much "Out" at the moment. But belive me there are 5 Huge projects we'd like the finish. So more to come soon!

New Themes For Ubuntu 12.04 Themes Are Now Out!

Saturday April 28th 2012   Jared Sot (of RAVEfinity):

It brings me great pleasure and a huge sigh of relief to finally be able to announce to you that all three of our "Flag-Ship" Themes have been updated for and now fully work with and support Ubuntu 12.04 LTS!

Updated for 12.04:
Ambiance & Radiance Colors (GTK Theme)
Ambiance & Radiance XfceLXDE (GTK Theme)
Humanity Colors (Icon Theme )

Do to the Major changes to the "Theme" Core of Gnome/GTK 3.4 (Ubuntu 12.04s base) The themes had to be completely "Re-Ported" and "Rewritten" in many spots to support 12.04. If thats not enough We had to do this for every color and variant. (Though semi "automated" in some spots) And then we had to test every color and its, gtk3 gtk2 , xfce4 ,metacity, GnomeShell theme and more! We DO NOT Release work that has not been toughly tested.

So we Essentially started work on April 1st and have brought 3 new stable releases to you by the 28th of April. Not bad but we will defiantly start earlier next time  :)

Special Thanks to all those people who reported the theme wasn't working on 12.04 yet. You got us motivated and in gear. Thanks

A few quick reminder/announcements:

The 12.04 version of the GTK themes work on GTK/Gnome 3.4 Ubuntu 12.04 and newer ONLY. It is not backwards compatible.  (Distros from April 2012 and Newer)

The 11.10.2 and 3 Versions of the themes are still available and still support Gnome/GTK 3.2 & 2 on 11.10, 11.04. (Distros from October 2011 and older)

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE HUMANITY COLORS ICON THEME. Version 12.04 of that works on any version! 10.04-12.04  (And Yes it has been updated with 12.04 support hence the name)

Also We have decided to change the way the releases are posted to this blog.
You will see a picture A link to our download/info page and a little info and perhaps highlights. But we will no longer "Paste Our Entire GnomeLook Page" on this blog. HAHA.

Anyway Thanks and Enjoy Folks.

Activating/Fixing your panel background in Xfce&LXDE

Note for Xfce and LXDE users... Starting with Ambiance & Radiance Colors theme and XFCE-LXDE Port version "11.10.2" and newer+

Due to their setup. Xfce and LXDE no longer have their panel background images applied automatically in the Theme it's self. We still support these desktops 100% as we did before but the panel background must now be set manually.

The reason for this change is Xfce and LXDE do not currently have fitting theme code options to use a "Panel.png" in the theme it's self for the panel without causing issues. Issues range from ugly unreadable segments or apps to major CPU USE from corruption. (Luckily the issues are contained and do not suck RAM just CPU until the app with the issue is closed. Still this is unacceptable.)

So It is NOW necessary for Ambiance and Radiance Colors Xfce and LXDE users to set their panel background manually. The end result looks the same or better then before and avoids the mentioned issues.

So Heres how we set the panel background image...
*REMEMBER* In doing it this way. Your panel will not change unless you change it! However it's very easy and safe to do! So before you change to another theme (Say down the line) make sure you reverse the changes made here. Or do the same for that theme (If it requires it)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Activating the Ambiance or Radiance Colors Panel Background in Xfce...

(!) Note that all Ambiance-ColorName themes use the same panel background. Same for the Radiance-ColorName themes.
so if you change to a different color you don't need to change the panel again unless your changing from Ambiance to Radiance (Or vise versa)

1.) Select and apply the Ambiance or Radiance Colors Xfce Theme of your choice (See howto guide on that if your unsure how.)
-You should see the theme has taken effect BUT the panel does not look quite right yet! Lets fix that now.

2.) Right Click on the Xfce Panel.

3.) Now on the pop-up dialog that appears select the "Panel" Submenu -> then select "Panel Preferences" Option.

3.) Now you will see a window that says "Panel" Click on the "Appearance" tab from this window.

4.) Now under the "Background" Section. Click on the "Style" drop-down menu and select "Background Image" from the drop down. (To Reverse any of these changes all you must do change this "Style" option back to "None (use system default)"

5.) Now under the Section that reads "File" click the box that reads "None" or a filename if previously used.

6.) A File Browser Window Titled "Select A Panel Background" Will now appear. Now Simply browse to one of the fallowing directories.

A.)
If your using a Ambiance Colors Theme:
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance-Ice-XfceLXDE/Panel/

If your using a Radiance Colors Theme:
/usr/share/themes/Radiance-Ice-XfceLXDE/Panel/

And Select the "panel.png" file

If you can't find the "/" or "usr" folders Try clicking the option on the side panel labeled filesystem (on the left-hand side panel).
Now Browse to the folder "usr" then the folder "share" then the folder "themes" EG. /usr/share/themes/

B.)
If you installed the theme in your home directory (Not likely unless you did it yourself on purpose.) Then Browse to...

If your using a Ambiance Colors Theme:
/home/USERNAME/themes/Ambiance-Ice-XfceLXDE/Panel/

If your using a Radiance Colors Theme:

Whats New? The Monthly Wrapup February!

It's that time again. A new mouth and a new list of things done and todo.
I apologize for the brevity of this post as I am quite tired. But it's a new tradition of ours to write the monthly wrapup on the last day of the mounth. So I can't screw that up (Just Yet.)

So what have we done in February? and what do we plan to do in the coming weeks?

What We Accomplished In February:

1.) We Created and Released the much requested Humanity Colors Icon Theme. The default Ubuntu Icon Theme in 8 Colors with both dark and light panel icon support. Goes great with The Ambiance and Radiance Colors Icon Theme.

2.)Once again we got that Humanity Colors Icon Theme packaged into the Offical RAVEfinity PPA. The Initial package was built Thanks to Andrew (From Webupd8.org) And Dr.Amr helped us once again setup a autobuild system. So the later versions 11.10.1 (and on) you have him to thank for the packaging :)

3.) We released a quick fix release to the Humanity Colors Icon Theme 11.10.1 . (Not a huge deal, just a few small fixes and adds a few panel icons)
If you are on 11.10 it's not a huge deal as we only added a few monochrome icons that some users where missing. But all users of the PPA should be auto updated. and you can grab 11.10.1 now if you'd like.

4.) We started heavy development on the Next version of Ambiance and Radiance Colors 11.10.3.

What Are We Up To Next?

1.) Finishing the Next version of Ambiance and Radiance Colors 11.10.3. This release will feature lots of enhancements. Including Window Buttons that look much better (Color Wise) They go well with the rest of the theme. Fixes so the gnome-shell theme is auto installed in the correct location automatically. Fixes to Xfce,Lxde and Openbox aspects of theme (Thanks to user submitted fixes) And quite possibly (and very likely) fixes and polish to the color selections for versions that need it... Like Ummm Cough: Red,Green,Orange so they don't look so "Unsaturated" After this release.

This is most likely the last major release of 11.10 series. until we pull from 12.04. You can expect this theme to fallow the stock Ambiance and Radiance themes closely.

We will be shifting some of are focus. As we no longer will hopefully need to be working on this theme "Full time" as it will hopefully will be in a great state and will only need to pull updates and changes from new Ambaince and Radiance versions then apply are modifications on top of that.

We hope to focus on our "flagship" works. The RAVEfinty 5 Icon and GTK theme. As well as our Wallpaper Pack. (While still maintaining and developing Ambiance and Radiance Colors, Humanity Colors, Ambiance and Radiance XFCE and LXDE of coerce.)

2.) Release a New Version of the Humanity Colors Icon Theme. With the Colors fixes we made in Ambiance and Radiance colors.

3.) Be ready for 12.04, Get all the themes Updated to 12.04 versions BY or a few days after 12.04 is out.

4.) Relax for 10 minutes and get back to work on RAVEfinity 5 (You Know that Flagship Theme That thing we've been working on for over a year now...)

Humanity Colors Icon Theme

Today it once again gives me great happiness to release something thats been suggested and requested numerous times. I originally wanted to release this with the Ambiance and Radiance Colors GTK Theme however time and lack of the proper tool made us postpone it's release. And we released Ambiance and Radiance Colors GTK theme first without it.

Now Ambiance and Radiance Colors have been doing great in their own respect. People would combine them with different icon themes of their choosing. But now we have A Icon Theme just for those themes. (The Colors compliment each other quite well.)

Thats right we today Feb 14 2012. Are proud to to announce the release of Humanity Colors Version Icons! The second and final piece to a complete the Colors Theme Suite. (Check out the GTK Theme Here.)

This Release would not be possible without the Great Theme Recoloring Script "Humanites" by Jennie Petoumeno. If you want to make your own color Humanity icons Check it out HERE.
